Last week the heads of the World Food Program, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, and the International Fund for Agriculture Development met in Rome to discuss long-term food security in Haiti. Joanas Gué, agriculture minister of Haiti, spoke to representatives of over 70 countries about the need to rebuild and redevelop the rural "backbone" of the country.
Plans for Haitian-led food and nutrition security include reducing the country's reliance on imports (which comprised 60% of consumable food and 80% of rice), targeting areas in rural southwestern Haiti for agriculture infrastructure improvement, and continuing to distribute seeds and agricultural tools.
