When you think of the relationship between cell phones and January's earthquake, the first thing that may come to mind is the communication blackout immediately following January 12. (Though, cell phone technology was the first mass communication system to rebound after the disaster.)
However, mobile phones have played an important role in the emergency response and relief efforts. Over $22 million was raised via cell phone donations in the week following the earthquake. The Coast Guard and other relief workers are fielding haunting text messages and desperate cries for help. In addition to text messages, workers are also using Facebook and Twitter postings to help direct supplies.
On the one hand, the pressures of modernization can lead to crowded and economically-depressed cities, which pose higher risks to individuals in the event of a disaster. At the same time, it is heartening to see technology used smartly to better connect the world with far-flung victims.
